Public Relations 101

When I tell people that I’m in public relations, they usually shake their heads like they know what I’m talking about, but when it comes right down to it, many people have no idea what public relations is.  In fact, one of my high school friends thought I did marketing videos for a living because she saw our videos on Facebook.  That’s part of what we do, but I thought I’d give you some more insight into Liz Lapidus P.R. (because every agency does not do exactly what we do).

Our clients are primarily restaurants, hotels, real estate, retail, non-profits and the arts.  One of our main goals is to get our clients in the news.  This means pitching editorial stories to newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and to online publications.  We often send a press release in hopes that they do stories on our clients – different than advertising because this is at no cost.  Editorial pieces are usually much more influential than ads.  We also want the media to use our clients as expert sources in their respective industries.  In addition, we respond to any media requests for information about or photos of our clients.

Event planning is also a huge part of our jobs.  We have planned everything from a 400 person men’s event for furniture store Roche Bobois to a private chef demo with Top Chef’s Eli Kirshtein at The Atlantic Condominium to a celebrity bartender fundraiser for AIDS Walk at Livingston Restaurant + Bar

And then there’s social media.  Billy Holcombe in our office is our social media guru and he takes the lead for most of our clients – creating content for their Facebook and twitter accounts.  It’s such an evolving communication tool, that we are constantly finding new ways to use it and create a buzz for our clients.

In a nutshell, that’s what we do at LLPR.  Of course we also shoot and edit videos for our clients, send out weekly e-blasts, help with talking points for their employees and much more.  But, you get the idea.  So now if someone tells you they’re in P.R., you can shake your head and really know what they’re talking about.
