Flux Projects Presents Amal Walks Across America

Flux Projects, in partnership with the Center for Puppetry Arts, the Decatur Arts Alliance, the City of Decatur, MARTA Artbound and Welcoming America, present Amal Walks Across America: One Thing to Take, on Tuesday, October 10, starting at 5 p.m. at the Decatur MARTA Station (Church Street entrance), as a part of a citywide visit during her epic 6,000-mile journey across the United States. Little Amal is the internationally-celebrated 12-foot-tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl, who carries the message of hope for displaced people everywhere, especially children who have been separated from their families. 

Flux Projects is among some of the country’s most influential cultural institutions and artists who will add their unique color to the rich tapestry throughout her two-month trek, which will span more than 35 U.S. cities and towns for 100+ events.

The event is free and open to the public, and children are encouraged to bring stuffed animals. The City of Decatur will have music and food on the plaza starting at 4 p.m.

Why a stuffed animal? 

A staggering 43.3 million children have been forcibly displaced from their homes since the end of 2022, according to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency. While nothing can replace their homes or heal their scars, stuffed animals have emerged as steadfast companions to refugee children: a constant source of emotional support, companionship, comfort and a tangible reminder of happier times.
