Happy Giving Tuesday, y'all. If you're wondering why your social feeds are filling up with #GivingTuesday, it's because for nearly 20 years, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has marked a moment of global generosity. Born out of a Chicago theater company (because all cool things come from the arts), Giving Tuesday is a direct response to the commercialization of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Yes - you should shop early and often (Community Farmers Markets, Twelve, Tootsies and A Cappella are some of our top local picks). Our friends in retail are hurting too. But non-profits are working overtime to feed the hungry, house the homeless and keep families supplied with diapers. Here are some of our faves.
Dad's Garage (welcome Tim Stoltenberg, interim artistic director) Emory University (fighting student food insecurity) Flux Projects (cheers to public art!) Friends to the Forlorn Pitbull Rescue (cheering you on, Lauriel!) Gateway Center (support services for people experiencing homelessness) Helping Mamas (has distributed 1,662,542 items this year alone!) Hillels of Georgia (check out their new website!) New Georgia Project Action Fund (let's get out the vote!) Second Helpings Atlanta (driving out hunger) YIMBY (beautiful ongoing Instagram photo essay putting a face on homelessness) Thank you for considering some causes that are important to us. This onset of cold weather will spur the needs even more. And although a vaccine is on the horizon, Covid will still be plaguing us for months and years to come. Please give if you can.
